Ektal a Twelve-beat Rhythm
Abstract. In Hindustani sangeet, there are four major rhythm cycles called Tintal (16 beats), Ektal (12 beats), Jhaptal (10 beats), and Rupak (7 beats). The main purpose of this note is to give the theka, some kaidas, and some tihais in Ektal.
Introduction. Indian musicians believe that Tintal (16 beats) is the most important tala performed in North Indian classical music. However, Ektal is not less important from some perspectives. On the one hand, Ektal is one of the most common rhythm cycles used in Hindustani vocal, instrumental, and dance music with all different tempos (called layas in the theory of North Indian classical music. On the other hand, Ektal is a symmetric and flexible tala that can be used in tabla solos extensively.
There exist many versions of Ektal in different gharanas (stylistic schools of music in India). In the following, I bring the one given by Pandit Aloke Dutta in his book with the title "Tabla - Lessons and Practice":
Ektal theka. Ektal is in 12 matras (beats) divided into 2+2+2+2+2+2 though some believe it can also be divided into 3+3+3+3. In the following, I bring one of the most famous ektal thekas:

Ektal tihais. Ektal tihais are a bit tricky! The assumption of repeating three times a phrase in "k" beats starting from the sam and ending on the other sam gives us the equation 3k=12n+1 and this equation has no solution in the ring of integer numbers because k=(12n+1)/3 cannot be an integer number. However, the Ektal tihais discussed in [D] give us a general Ektal tihai formula, and based on this formula, I give a sample and the reader may compose similar Ektal tihais.

Appendix. Similar to Ektal, there are some rhythm cycles such as Choutal (12 beats) and Dadra (6 beats).
