Prof. Dr. Winfried Bruns is a German mathematician best known for his excellent works in commutative algebra, particularly
combinatorial commutative algebra (Lattice polytopes, Newton polyhedra and their relations with commutative algebra and algebraic
geometry) as well as algebraic geometry (determinantal varieties and toric varieties). He also works on computational algebra.
Beside
publishing more than 85 papers in mathematics, he has composed some very influential books in mathematics, co-authored by
his ex-PhD supervisor, Prof. Dr. Udo Vetter (Determinantal rings) and his colleagues Prof. Dr. Jürgen Herzog (Cohen-Macaulay
rings) and Prof. Joseph Gubeladze (Polytopes, rings and K-theory).
Prof. Dr. Winfried Bruns is currently
a professor at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Osnabrück.
